The longest highking trail (about 16km) of Europe is located in no other place than Chania! Specifically, Samaria Gorge is definitely one of the most impressive gorges in Crete, if not in whole Greece. The famous gorge is located up in the White Mountains (or as locals call them Lefka Ori) and is the only National Park in Crete. It offers protection to over 450 species of both plants and animals, 70 of which are endemic to Crete. The trail takes about 6-8 hours to cross, depending on your fitness level and other conditions such as weather and high number of visitors. At the end of the trail, you will reach the seaside village of Agia Roumeli where you can relax, take a swim at the crystal clear waters and enjoy the local Cretan cuisine.

Exotic and absolutely stunning, Preveli beach is all that you could ask for on a sunny day. This tropical setting is packed with palm trees and offers some of the most spectacular views. Additionally, it is located in the southern part of Rethymno. So, if you’re planning a day trip to that area, Preveli beach should be on the top of your list. As you take the path down to the beach, you will see a river that comes down from the Kourtaliotis Gorge all the way to the beach. The beautiful palm trees create a thick shade that offers just the right protection from the sun. If you are intrigued by Preveli Beach, you should definitely check out the nearby historical Preveli Monastery. The building dates back to the 16th century and offers complete serenity.
